You want me to go where…? Tonight!?!

When I walked into work Tuesday morning, the first thing Awesome Boss said to me is “Morning! Have any plans tonight?” Sadly, he should have known the answer was no… My weeknights of as of late consist of babysitting for Awesome Boss and his wife’s best couple friends, or strategically eliminating half the clothes in my closet (‘Insanity!’ you cry, Dear Reader, but we’ll get to my motive there soon). “Good,” he said, “because I need you to attend this event for me tonight. I can’t make it.” With that, he lays a printout on my desk, and leaves for a client meeting.

I scan the invitation, and what do I see?:

Domino Magazine Invites You To Celebrate The Best In New York City Design

Holy. Freaking. Cow.

Naturally, the first thing I do is look down at myself and realize that I absolutely can’t wear what I’m wearing to an event like this. I’m starting to realize that chic New Yorkers are always clad in some form of those day-to-night outfits always profiled in magazines, since a fabulous impromptu cocktail party of last-minute work event (domino magazine!) is always around the corner.

I send a frantic text to my mother to begin a wardrobe brainstorming session. I’ve finally found a go-to LBD (little black dress) in the form of J. Crew’s Super 120s sleeveless sheath. It fulfills that whole “classic yet unstuffy” look I’m always aiming for. Clothing solidified.

The real issue I have is the complete lack of classic accessories in my wardrobe. Transitioning coasts and careers has left me with a surplus of stuffy clothes for the cubicle, but a serious lack in aforementioned fun, chic, day to night attire. Saving money for the wedding has left me with a real void in shopping funds (monthly clothing budget: $0.00), so we had a real shopping emergency on our hands.

Luckily for me, my saving grace came in the form of a little green bag.

(cue choir singing “Hallelujah”)

I managed to find the most b-e-a-utiful pair of d’orsay heels at Kate. In my size. On sale. All I needed was the cheapest clutch-like accessory I could find in the matching black patent leather. The sales girl pulled a brilliant move (love those gals at the flagship SoHo store!) and found a travel wallet that would convert beautifully to a minimalist clutch. Fashion crisis officially averted. (and lifelong dream to own a chic travel wallet fulfilled, natch!)Here's how Lulu spend the rest of her evening:

The event was a hit, and I now have a day-to-night outfit I adore.

Have you narrowly averted a fashion disaster recently? Do tell!
